How clubs are ranked and labelled
Every club on this site receives one power ranking position and at least one category label. This page defines each term, explains how the ladder is ordered, and states clearly what the system does not do.
The label set
Six labels are in use for 2026–27. They are applied from the fixed snapshot and are used identically on every page of the site.
A club described as best placed to challenge for the top of the table. The label identifies the group at the head of the ladder; it does not name a winner and does not rank one contender above another in likelihood.
Applied to: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool.
A strong candidate for the European places. This tier sits directly behind the title group on the ladder and is described using neutral language such as “strong contender” and “needs a fast start”.
Applied to: Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Aston Villa.
A team with upside that could outperform consensus. A dark horse is not promoted into a higher tier on this site; the label simply records that the club’s ceiling is judged to sit above its ladder position.
Applied to: Brighton & Hove Albion, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United.
A club newly arrived from the Championship for the 2026–27 season. The label is purely factual within the snapshot and carries no judgement of quality on its own.
Applied to: Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Hull City.
A club at elevated risk of finishing near the bottom of the table. The label marks membership of the relegation battle group. It is not a prediction that the club will be relegated and it does not order the group by risk.
Applied to: Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Hull City, Brentford, Sunderland, Everton.
A club that appears in the power ranking but carries no tier label in the snapshot is classified as mid-table. Where no ranking position and no label exist, the status is recorded as unknown rather than estimated.
Applied to: Fulham (mid-table).
How the power ranking is ordered
The power ranking is an editorial ordering of all twenty clubs from first to twentieth. It is built on three considerations, weighted by judgement rather than formula:
- Overall strength — the club’s general standing within the snapshot’s tier structure.
- Squad stability — how settled the club’s situation appears entering the season.
- Season outlook — the shape of the campaign implied by the club’s labels, including promotion or relegation-battle status.
The ladder contains no points, ratings, percentages or probabilities. Bar lengths in the ladder graphic represent position on the list and nothing else.
Clubs with more than one label
Three clubs hold two labels: Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City are both promoted clubs and relegation candidates. Both labels are always shown on club profiles. In the ladder graphic, the label that most directly defines the season shape is displayed, and the second label is listed on the club index.
Language rules
- Neutral editorial phrasing only: “strong contender”, “best placed”, “needs a fast start”, “likely to adapt quickly”, “faces a difficult season”, “could outperform expectations”.
- No betting terminology, odds, stakes or value language.
- The word “favourite” is not used, because the snapshot does not support it.
- No transfers, injuries, lineups, tactical claims, historical records, attendance, weather or ticketing information.
Limits of the method
This is an editorial classification, not a model. It is fixed for the season snapshot published with the site, it is not recalculated after matches, and it should not be read as a forecast of the final table. Sections that cannot be built from the snapshot are omitted from the site entirely rather than filled with estimates.
