The 2026–27 season is about to begin. This preview organises the twenty clubs of the English top flight into clear editorial tiers — title contenders, top-four contenders, dark horses, promoted clubs and the relegation battle — and orders them in a single power ranking ladder.
No predictions of exact outcomes. No betting content. Every label on this site comes from the fixed season-preview snapshot included in the website.
Module 01
Three clubs carry the title contender label in the fixed snapshot. They occupy the top three rungs of the power ladder and are described here as best placed to challenge for the top of the table.
Arsenal begin 2026–27 on the first rung of our power ladder and are listed as a title contender in the snapshot. On the labels available they are the best placed side to challenge for the top. Nothing beyond that ordering is claimed here.
Manchester City sit second on the ladder and share the title contender label. That places them among the small group of clubs framed as strong contenders for the championship. Their tier is unchanged from the snapshot.
Liverpool complete the title contender group in third place on the ladder. They are treated as a strong contender rather than a favourite, because the snapshot supplies a tier and an order and nothing more.

Module 02
Five clubs form the tier directly behind the title group. They are labelled top-four contenders: strong candidates for the European places, ranked fourth to eighth on the ladder.
Chelsea head the group behind the title contenders and are listed fourth on the ladder. The snapshot places them as a strong candidate for the European places rather than the championship group.
Manchester United are fifth on the ladder inside the top-team tier. They are framed as a European-place candidate for 2026–27, with the top-four contender label applied from the fixed data.
Tottenham Hotspur occupy the middle of the top-team tier at sixth. The label positions them as a strong candidate for the European places without extending into the title group.
Newcastle United are seventh on the ladder and carry the top-four contender label. They are best placed among the lower half of the tier to press upward if the season opens well.
Aston Villa close the top-team tier in eighth. They sit on the boundary between the European-place candidates and the dark-horse group that follows on the ladder.
Module 03
Three clubs arrive from the Championship for 2026–27. Each is listed as a promoted club and also appears in the relegation-watch group, and all three occupy the final three rungs of the ladder.
Coventry City are the highest ranked of the three promoted clubs at eighteenth. The snapshot also lists them in the relegation battle, so their season is framed as a first-year adaptation task in the top flight.
Ipswich Town return to the top flight and are placed nineteenth on the ladder. They are listed both as a promoted club and as a relegation candidate in the fixed data.
Hull City complete the promoted group and start the season on the twentieth rung. They are also part of the relegation-watch list, which makes an early points return the central theme of their campaign.
Module 04
Six clubs appear on the relegation-watch list. The label marks an elevated risk of finishing near the bottom — it is not a forecast of the final table.
The highest ranked club on the relegation-watch list at thirteenth. Their season is framed as a battle to stay clear of the bottom group rather than a fight from within it.
Everton sit fifteenth and are listed in the relegation battle. Distance from the foot of the ladder is modest, so a fast start carries weight.

Five clubs carry the dark horse label: sides with upside that could outperform expectations. They occupy ranks nine to fourteen on the ladder, directly behind the top-team tier.
Highest ranked of the dark horses at ninth, immediately below the top-team tier. Best placed of the group to press upward if the season opens well.
Tenth on the ladder and inside the dark-horse group. Positioned as a side that could outperform consensus without being framed as a European-place candidate.
Eleventh on the ladder with the dark-horse label. A club whose ceiling, in this snapshot, is set above its ladder position.
Twelfth on the ladder and part of the dark-horse group. Not listed in the relegation battle, which separates them from the clubs just below.
Fourteenth on the ladder, the lowest of the dark horses, and the only club in the group ranked below a relegation-watch side. Could outperform expectations if the label holds.
Fulham appear in the power ranking at sixteenth without a tier label in the snapshot, so they are treated as mid-table: neither a dark horse nor a relegation candidate here.
Module 06
One editorial ordering of all twenty clubs, from first to twentieth. The bars are a visual representation of ladder position only; they carry no score, rating or probability.
Where a club holds two labels in the snapshot, the ladder shows the label that defines its season shape most directly. Full label sets are listed on the club index.
